2015 Demolition Derby
October 23-25, 2015
NC State Fair
The weather was perfect, no rain. The track conditions were just right, not soupy like some years. The towing company was there as well again this year. We all worked well together. It seems like we are getting a good system in place, with at least 2 or 3 of us directing traffic and the others pulling cars. We took the cars with 4 rolling tires, brakes and steering and put them to the left all the way up to the entrance of the derby area. We put the cars that were not able to be towed out and crammed them to the right in the pit area. We all had a good time. We had a mix of repeat volunteers and first timers from as far away as Delaware. The Wake County Sheriff Department was there to keep the peace and there were times they were needed. One fan needed to be escorted from the stands. There were 1 or 2 times when the drivers needed to be reminded of what good sportsmanship behavior is. There were no rollovers, some fires and 2 injuries. This was the first time I had ever seen a Jersey barrier fail and break. A couple of square foot piece broke off and ended up a few feet from where it should have been. Except for that 1 fan, all the crowds seemed to have loved the shows. I can’t wait till next year.
