It was a good trip. We had ups and downs, some issues we need to address at a later date.
Overall I had a lot of fun and didn’t break anything that I know of. I may have to have the transmission serviced, I’m not sure but there may be something up with it. Doesn’t want to kick down and a couple of other things that didn’t seem right trying to maintain some higher speeds. Might just need a good flush and filter.
The great thing about this club is how we don’t leave anyone behind and find solutions to problems.
I’ll be uploading some dashcam footage shortly to the photo’s page.

Thursday 23 August.
I arrived at Windrock about 2PM and opened the cabins. Everyone started to arrive about 4PM and we then decided to take a late afternoon ride before dinner. There were 14 members and 10 vehicles. A few of the more Hard-rockers went out one way and the rest of us took Trail 22 up to the top of the hill. Nice way to start out the weekend.
We then had hamburgers and hot dogs; great meal and thanks to those that provided the food and the cooking.
Stayed up late enjoying the fire and the company; with some drinks too.
Friday 24 August
Great breakfast by some great cooks. A meal that helped as we spent the entire day on the trails. We took trail 2 to trail 16 and went all the way to the top of the mountain. Bob T, Carl & Martin took one more difficult bypass and the rest of us took the more moderate path. Had lunch down by the Waterfall. Headed down trail 13 to the Beaver Damn; but had to turn around because of very big tree down across the trail. We went to the overlook and met up with the Hard-rockers who had taken some other trails. Back to camp for another great dinner.
I, once again, had to make some changes to my Ball Joints; seems to be my fun and fulltime project. Another great dinner. Stories around the fire.
Saturday 25 August
Another great mal and great cooks. The Hard-rockers went off to some great adventures. The rest of us went off down thru Oliver Springs and up the back way into Windorck Park on Trails 48 and 81 back up to trail G6, down trail 26 and had lunch at the Pavilion. Then up trail 27. Then off to some other areas of the park to Trails 41, 42, and 43. Ran into another large tree across the road and had to turn back. Back down trail 22 (the trail we took up on the first day) and back to camp.
And yet another great dinner and late fun around the fire.
Sunday 26 August
Finally, a pretty uneventful trip home.
I had a great time and hope others did as well. Looking forward to another trip to Windrock in the future.

Input from Martin Thiele

Lee, Bob T, Martin T, Jeff McCoy, Rob A & Annie A, Carl & Anna

Friday
Breakfast
Then got out on the trails around 9:30 am
Great day of trail riding – had Lunch at the Falls did Trail 16 and Bob t , Carl & Martin did the optional obstacle
went to the overlook area
Carl – had some issues with a spark plug being disconnected.
Martin – had mud and dirt jammed in his bead – caused a slow leak.
Later Martin changed to his spare
Jeff McCoy and his excursion made it everywhere – we had to turn around once due to a few very Large trees impassible with Jeff’s beast.
Another time we had to turn around due to larger tree across the trail.
Lee had to switch out a bad ball joint in his TJ .
Devin, Dusty and David went out to trail 21 – and other extreme trails
Sat.
Breakfast
Rob and Annie went to Dollywood then home – all wheeled out – No damage
9:45 am take off.
We went to more great trails.
Jeff McCoy and his excursion made it everywhere – we had to turn around once due to a few very Large trees impassible with Jeff’s beast.
Devin , Dusty , David and Chris Hart ( lone jeep asked to ride with our group) – went to extreme stuff .
Dusty had some steering issues and maybe something with his drive line.
Overall great trip – I would recommend Windrock as regular trip every year.
Sunday drove home – Jeff McCoy lost his transmission just past Asheville heading east near Marion exit 86.
He got home at midnight with help from David Holmes getting a trailer to haul the excursion.
I hope this helps you Lee
Thank you for the great trip and leading us on the trails.
Input from Jeff McCoy
Huge thanks to Anna and Carl for using one of her AAA tows to get me 100 miles closer to Raleigh. Enormous thanks to David for trucking all the way to Holly Springs just to turn around and come get the beast with a flatbed trailer. I don’t have a winch yet… so we had to ratchet the thing up by hand for over an hour and a bucket full of sweat and tears. Got back to Clayton around midnight all safely unloaded.
Transmission went out in the Excursion half way home. Think it’s a clutch pack. While in cruise control, the RPMs started bouncing… 3500 to 2200. Took it out of cruise, gave it throttle – no response. Drive shaft not turning when put in forward gears, but does go into reverse fine. Now to the work of cleaning it up and preparing the garage for a rebuild.
Anyone got any automatic transmission experience and would like to help?? Not sure when I’ll be able to dive in, work is busy and just preparing the workspace will take me a few days at least. Im not in any rush.
Almost forgot – Big thanks to Bob for towing me off the highway safely and checking in to make sure we made it back.
Whole caravan was a big help in sticking together and seeing it through to various points of resolution.
Comments from Anna
Thanks Lee for doing such a great job organizing this trip. Fun rides and beautiful scenery. We did a lot of driving! Great for me to learn my vehicle and driving style. AJ and Kyle had a blast riding with Ronnie, Devin, David and our new friend, Chris. So thanks to them for giving those boys that experience.
